- The revolutionary DriveAway turntable attracts visitors at the Chelsea Flower Show.
DRIVEWAY TURNTABLE SUCCESS AT CHELSEA SHOWThe revolutionary new driveway turntable from British Turntable proved to be an outstanding success at the Chelsea Flower Show, where Classic Landscape's ‘Turntable Garden' won a Silver Flora award in the Show Gardens category, a fantastic achievement at such a prestigious event in the gardening calendar. The revolve also featured in BBC2's show reports.
The Turntable Garden demonstrated how easy, attractive and cost-effective it can be to retain the look and feel of a garden while creating parking space and turnaround for the family car. Designed by Classic Landscapes of Sale in Cheshire, the garden was part of ‘Sun Flower Street', a representation of an attractive urban street. The DriveAway turntable, which featured a gravel bonded deck specially constructed for the show, contributed towards drawing a number of extra visitors to the stand, which was packed for much of the show. Its unique nature created a stir of media and press interest.
"We are delighted to have received a silver award from the RHS for our first ever garden exhibit at Chelsea," says Kevin Dunne of Classic Landscapes. "It's true to say that one of the major focal points to attract the judges was the use of the turntable. With more and more front gardens disappearing because parking space is needed, a turntable becomes paramount in order to retain the garden while keeping parking off the street.
"What's more, the turntable doesn't just overcome difficulties reversing onto or off busy main roads, it's pleasing to the eye and fits in nicely with the rest of the garden area."
The DriveAway was originally conceived to provide a solution to the dangerous procedure of reversing onto or from a busy main road but has proved to offer many additional benefits to the householder. It reduces difficult vehicle manoeuvres, making it safer to negotiate awkward driveways, for instance where a restricted entry exists, perhaps with high fences or hedges that impede vision, or where the entrance is long, winding and narrow. And, as Kevin Dunne points out, installation of a DriveAway can lessen the need to sacrifice the garden for turning and parking the family car. In some instances it may even assist with planning issues when renovating or building a home where road access is restricted.
The DriveAway is easy to install and operate: the car is simply driven onto the turntable and when the time comes to drive off again, it can be pushed round manually to point it in the direction of travel. Robust enough to take the majority of family-sized vehicles, it is economical, smooth in operation, built to withstand inclement weather conditions and requires little maintenance. Although designed to be surface mounted, the DriveAway can be flush-fitted into the surrounding surface if preferred, a relatively simple and inexpensive option given its low profile of only 70mm.
